How Lowri left her job and created success with a Sweaty Mama franchise...

April 1, 2018

Please tell us a bit about the nature of your business...

I teach exercise classes for mums where they can bring their little one(s) with them and even incorporate them into the workout.

What inspired you to start your business?

I left my job working for a charity where I was lucky enough to be able to take my daughter with me. I was looking for an opportunity that would fit in with my life and as an ex fitness instructor and gym manager, purchasing a Sweaty Mama franchise was the perfect answer. I teach, my daughter joins in and my mum's  even able to help out with any older children who don't want to join in.

What was the most challenging aspect of building your business in the beginning?

Not knowing how to reach out to potential mamas without coming across as 'spammy'. Fitness and exercise can be a difficult topic for new mum's and I didn't want to make that worse for them.

If you were to launch your business again, would you do anything differently?

Yes, definitely. I made some mistakes including treading on people's toes without intending to and also being too open with people who didn't have my best interests at heart.

What keeps you motivated?

Wanting to grow my business, wanting to help my husband build a better life for our family, wanting to build a community of like minded women and support them through their fitness journey

How do you balance work and family life?

I am lucky that I get to take my daughter to work with me and that a lot of my work is social media advertising which I fit in around family life.

What’s your proudest business moment?

When mamas send me videos of their children exercising at home and copying the moves I have done with their mums. I love that they are inspired and that they find fitness fun and a normal part of daily life.

I organised a mama and baby event with another local mum in business. I loved that I was able to combine free advertising for my business, which was also providing a place for other mums in business to showcase their products and services.

What’s been your most successful form of marketing and/ or brand awareness?

I organised a Mama and Baby event with another mum in business. I loved that I was able to combine free advertising for my business with providing a service to local mum's and providing a place for other mum's in business to be able to sell their products and services.

Do you have any positive habits or routines that you feel have attributed to your success?

Consistency in my social media presence and the relationship that I have with the women I teach. It feels very mutually supportive and they know that we are on this journey together.

What's your favourite business app/ tool/ book/ podcast etc?

Mums in business association have been a huge help in so many aspects of my online presence. I use Facebook primarily as it is the best way for me to connect with local mums but I enjoy sharing my business worldwide on instagram.

What advice would you give to new entrepreneurs just starting out?

Find something you are really passionate about. If you don't everything will feel like a chore and people won't connect with you. Be true to yourself and people will warm to that and want to be part of what you are doing.
