How Your Mindset Can Make or Break Your Business

May 9, 2018

If you've read the bio's of the world's most successful entrepreneurs, athletes, artists, musicians, politicians etc, there's always one thing they have in common; an undeniable and unbreakable belief in themselves and their abilities.

In today's article we're going to discuss why your mindset is so vitally important for your success, and how it can make or break your business.

This a huge topic, one that I could write about for the next 5 pages, but I'm guessing if you're reading this you've either got a small person sleeping on you, your kids are finally at school or that sacred time of bedtime has passed and you're enjoying your few evening hours of solitary peace. So I'm going to make this quick and to the point.

Believe it or not, your mind controls almost everything about you and your actions. It controls how you feel about yourself, how you view the outside world, how you respond to others and situations, what you eat and drink, what you do for a living and most importantly it has the power to control your future. Now lets not put the mind on some super high pedestal and think that we have no choice but to bow down and submit to it's wishes, oh no... the mind is something we have to learn to control, we have to programme it and we have to form the habits and nature of it's (/our) thoughts. We are not helpless victims of our brains, we can with some determination become victors of our brains, and with that our lives.

“If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it - then I can achieve it.”

- Muhammad Ali

I'm not going to go into the science of it all as I'll be here for a while, but if you have a spare 5 minutes, just head on over to Google and search for 'the science of positive thinking'. I promise it'll blow your mind... in a good way. Quantum physics is uncovering that your perceptions and beliefs about reality actually alter reality to fit your perspective. Yup you read right, your thoughts and your beliefs (that includes your worries and fears) are actually altering your reality AKA your thoughts are making your future.

"Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions"

- Albert Einstein

So if our thoughts and beliefs have that kind of proven power, should we not be using that power to it's maximum potential in building and growing our businesses?

Let's do a quick mindset status check, here are some questions to ask about yourself and your business:

Do you believe you are successful?

Do you believe you deserve success?

Is your business flourishing and growing?

Are you or your business financially doing well?

Do you wake up excited to start the day and for what it'll bring?

Are you excited for the future and what you/ your business will achieve?

Did you answer 'no' to any of those questions? It's a tough one. For some bizarre reason, modern day society programmes us to think small. To believe that success only happens to the "lucky" few and the rest of us have to labour on hoping and dreaming that our big break will just magically happen one day. Well, here's the good news! IT'S NOT TRUE!! If you answered 'yes' to a few questions, then you've got one foot in the door to positive thinking- which is great! Of course if you answered 'yes' to all, then AWESOME! We're excited with you for all that amazing success coming your way.

Who doesn't love a dancing gnome?! Anyway, if you want to give that mindset of yours a kick up the backside and make it start working FOR you, so all your hard work can lead you to the success you deserve, then listen up. Lucy-Rose Walker is the founder and CEO of Entrepreneurial Spark, and she has some of my favourite advice on mindset and business. She says that successful entrepreneurs need three things: a passion for their business, a vision of its success, and the ability to focus on making it a reality. “Too often you can be distracted by shiny things or external factors,” she explains, “but to really thrive you need to be able to block these out.”. LOVE IT! Passion, vision and focus! Grab a paper and pen (or any note writing device you wish) and write down the answers to these questions:

  1. What do you love about your business? This will remind you of your passion.

  2. What does a successful business look like to you? Write down everything about it... income, customers, employees, office/ location, YOU!

  3. What do you need to focus on right now that will help move you closer to you vision?

You've now got the start to your action plan to success and your vision is in your mind. Remind yourself every day what that vision looks like, what it feels like, how it's going to effect your family's life.. everything about it!
